Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Ethanol Extract from Whole Onion (Allium cepa L.) with Leaves

This study was conducted to evaluate and increase the usage of whole onion (Allium cepa L.), which is composed a small bulb many leaves that are discarded as by-products before bulbs grow. Whole onions harvested early in immature condition, allows other grow well. We compared its functional activities with those quercetin, one major components. The antioxidant ethanol extract from (WOEE) were measured by DPPH ABTS radical scavenging activities, superoxide dismutase (SOD) catalase (CAT) activities. anti-inflammatory effects WOEE investigated RAW 264.7 macrophages treated LPS analyzing cytokine levels expressions using ELISA kits RT-PCR assays, respectively. showed high on SOD CAT significantly reduced production nitric oxide, IL-1?, IL-6, TNF-?, and/or their mRNA dose-dependent manner. results indicated had effects, comparable quercetin may be used novel potential therapeutic candidate.
